In a new annual showcase in partnership with Design-Nation, the Hub is shining a spotlight on emerging and developing talents from a range of craft disciplines. Two Cockpit makers, handweaver Deb King and woven textile designer Lara Pain, will be showing work.
Deb will be showing handwoven passementerie made from very fine redundant silk thread, which she hand spins into multiple cords giving the silk a new three-dimensional presence. The cords are then carefully placed in narrow warps using lace weave and passementerie techniques. This gives the traditional and endangered crafts a contemporary twist by increasing the scale and breaking the rules. Each piece offers a delicate and intricate pattern which invites the viewer to trace the path of individual threads and consider the spaces between them.
